Quick answer

For a car rental at Heraklion Airport (HER), compare the total cost in USD (base rate, excess cover, fuel policy, deposit and extras) rather than the headline daily rate, and confirm whether pickup is an in-terminal desk or a shuttle. US travelers should book early for summer, expect a manual car unless they specifically secure an automatic, carry an International Driving Permit alongside a US license, and bring a credit card for the supplier's deposit hold.

  • Pickup at HER comes in three forms: a desk in the arrivals hall, a free shuttle to an off-site office, or meet-and-greet. In a sample of 50 of the cheapest offers on DiscoverCars' HER page, most were marked as shuttle pickups.
  • Alamo and National list an in-terminal desk at HER open 07:30–23:00 daily, according to their location pages (checked October 2026).
  • DiscoverCars reports an average daily cost at HER of about $12 in December, $17 in October and $43 in August; the yearly average is about $25. These are averages from its own data, not quotes.
  • All 50 offers in the sampled DiscoverCars results were manual transmissions. If you need an automatic, filter for it and book early.
  • Broker Full Coverage is reimbursement-based: you pay the supplier first, claim later, and the supplier still holds a deposit.
  • DiscoverCars Full Coverage is capped at €5,000 (about $5,602) and covers misfuelling; EconomyBookings Full Coverage is capped at €1,700 (about $1,905) and excludes misfuelling and off-road driving.
  • The US State Department says rental and coverage providers may require an IDP in addition to your US license; the Embassy does not issue IDPs. AAA lists a $20 permit fee, valid for one year.
  • The cheapest supplier on DiscoverCars' HER page, Surprice, is also one of the lowest rated on DiscoverCars' own scale (6.7 'Poor' from 1,783 ratings), so check supplier ratings, not just price.

Our picks

1

Stronger documented coverage terms

DiscoverCars

Best for: Travelers who want a broker with a higher Full Coverage cap and a large supplier list at HER

DiscoverCars is a comparison and booking site that lists many HER suppliers, including several shuttle-based low-price operators. Its Full Coverage product has the higher cap of the two brokers (€5,000) and covers tires, underbody and misfuelling, according to its help pages. It is a comparison tool, not a rental company, so the supplier still handles the car, the desk and the deposit. Disclosure: we earn a commission on bookings, and DiscoverCars also pays on Full Coverage sales.

Pros

  • Full Coverage cap of €5,000 (about $5,602) versus €1,700 at EconomyBookings
  • Covers tires, underbody, windows, mirrors and misfuelling per its help center
  • Large number of HER offers, so easy to compare supplier ratings and shuttle vs desk pickup
  • Trustpilot score of 4.6/5 from about 290K reviews on 2026-10-07 (customers are invited to review)

Cons

  • Full Coverage works by reimbursement; you pay the supplier first and the deposit hold still applies
  • Desk staff may say the cover isn't valid because they can't see it in their system
  • Full Coverage price is not published by DiscoverCars; check the price shown at checkout
  • Cancelling Full Coverage refunds as booking credit, not cash, per its terms
  • Cheapest listed supplier at HER is one of the lowest rated

Price: DiscoverCars' own data shows an average of about $25/day across the year at HER, and $43/day in August. Figures checked October 2026; confirm live quotes at checkout.

Second comparison tool to quote

EconomyBookings

Best for: Travelers who want a second set of live quotes to compare against DiscoverCars and the supplier's own site

EconomyBookings is another broker. Its Full Coverage has a lower cap (€1,700) and more exclusions, including misfuelling and off-road driving, according to its FAQ. No HER data was retrieved from EconomyBookings, so we cannot say it is cheaper or more expensive; get same-date quotes from both. Disclosure: we earn a commission on bookings made through our link.

Pros

  • Can be quoted alongside DiscoverCars for the same dates and car class
  • Full Coverage lists wheels, tires, undercarriage, glass and mirrors as covered
  • Trustpilot score of 4.4/5 from about 155K reviews on 2026-10-07 (customers are invited to review)

Cons

  • Full Coverage cap is €1,700 (about $1,905), well below DiscoverCars'
  • Excludes misfuelling, off-road driving, extras and cleaning; its FAQ lists mechanical components as both covered and excluded, so read the wording
  • Reimbursement model; the supplier still blocks a deposit on your credit card
  • Claims must be filed within 30 days of the rental end
  • One anecdotal report (location unknown) describes a supplier refusing the broker cover as a substitute and charging $250

Price: No HER data was retrieved from EconomyBookings in our research (October 2026). Run a live same-date quote.

How do you choose a car rental at Heraklion Airport?

Start with the total, not the daily rate. A car rental at Heraklion Airport that looks like $5 a day can end up far more expensive once you add excess cover, a deposit hold, fuel rules and extras.

Use this order of decisions:

  1. Pickup type: in-terminal desk, shuttle or meet-and-greet.
  2. Transmission: manual or automatic.
  3. Excess and deposit: how much the supplier can charge you for damage, and how much it holds on your card.
  4. Fuel policy and extras.
  5. Supplier rating, not just price.

Disclosure: LifePlusTech earns a commission if you book through our DiscoverCars or EconomyBookings links, and DiscoverCars also pays on its Full Coverage product. That affects our incentives, so we ranked on documented terms only and recommend quoting the supplier's own site as well. We have not tested these services; everything here comes from public pages and notes checked in October 2026.

Where do you pick up a rental car at Heraklion Airport (HER)?

There are three common setups at Nikos Kazantzakis Airport (HER).

In-terminal desk

DiscoverCars says most suppliers are in the arrivals hall. Alamo and National list a desk in the arrivals terminal, open 07:30–23:00 daily, with cars parked within walking distance, according to the Alamo HER page and the National HER page.

Free shuttle

In a sample of 50 of the cheapest offers on DiscoverCars' HER page (shown for an October 9 pickup), most were marked 'Free shuttle service'. Examples from supplier descriptions: Surprice asks you to leave arrivals, cross the street and meet at the parking-area entrance, with its office in Nea Alikarnassos. Another supplier's meeting point is about 100 m left of the arrivals exit. ABBYCAR has a desk in the airport rental area next to Hertz, then a shuttle to its own station.

Meet-and-greet

Some offers are tagged 'meet and greet'. Skyscanner listed such an offer (Street Rent a Car), though that page was months old when we checked, so confirm with the supplier.

We could not find the airport operator's official page on rental desk layout, so confirm the exact meeting point in your voucher and the supplier's instructions before you fly.

Is it cheaper to rent at the airport or in Heraklion city?

We have no sourced like-for-like data comparing airport and city prices, so we won't claim a percentage. What we can say is how to compare fairly.

Many of the cheapest airport offers are shuttle-based, which means the office is off-airport but the pickup is still arranged from the terminal. A true city pickup adds a taxi or bus ride, and the time cost on arrival day. Price a city pickup, a shuttle pickup and an in-terminal desk for the same dates, then add transport cost to the city option.

If you arrive late or after a long flight, an in-terminal desk with long hours (07:30–23:00 at the Alamo and National desks) can be worth a premium. If you are staying in Heraklion city for a few days first, you may not need a car for those days at all.

How much does car rental at Heraklion Airport cost in USD?

Prices swing with the season. DiscoverCars' own data for HER (checked October 2026) shows these average daily costs:

  • January $20, February $14, March $16, April $15, May $18, June $21
  • July $34, August $43, September $28
  • October $17, November $13, December $12

The yearly average is about $25. On the same page, 'from' prices by type were small cars from $4/day, SUV from $10, station wagon from $11, van from $33, convertible from $37 and premium from $57. The cheapest sampled offer was $4.39/day for a Fiat 500 from Surprice.

Be careful with averages. Skyscanner showed about $186/day for HER on a page that was months old, while advertising rentals 'from $10'. The methods behind each figure are unknown. A separate blog (Zigzag on Earth) puts Crete at roughly $15–50/day. Treat all of these as orientation and take live quotes.

Illustrative base-rate math (not a quote)

Typical rentals last 8–9 days, per DiscoverCars. For 8 days:

  • August at the $42.73 average: about $342 base
  • October at the $17 average: about $136 base

These are base-rate illustrations only, before coverage, fuel, extras and any one-way fee. DiscoverCars does not publish its Full Coverage price, so add the price shown at checkout. Always confirm at checkout.

Euro amounts in this guide use the ECB reference rate of €1 = $1.1204 on 5 October 2026 (ECB). Your card issuer may add foreign transaction fees if a supplier charges in euros; check with your bank.

What do the excess, deposit and full coverage really mean in Crete?

The excess is the amount you can be charged if the car is damaged or stolen. The deposit is a hold the supplier places on your card at pickup. They are related but not the same, and both vary by supplier.

We could not find deposit amounts for HER (DiscoverCars' listing says 'Average deposit' without a figure), nor debit-card acceptance, minimum age or young and senior driver fees. Check each of these in the supplier's rental terms before you pay. EconomyBookings says the supplier blocks the deposit on your credit card; card rules are otherwise unknown, so confirm them in the terms.

Broker Full Coverage: how it works

Both DiscoverCars and EconomyBookings sell a separate Full Coverage product that works by reimbursement. You pay the supplier for any damage first, then claim the money back. The supplier still holds its deposit.

  • DiscoverCars: up to €5,000 in total. Covers excess for damage and theft, windows, mirrors, lamps, wheels and tires, underbody, roof, mechanical damage, towing and taxi, lost keys, misfuelling and admin fees. Excludes gross negligence or breach of the rental agreement, cleaning, interior damage and third-party damage. DiscoverCars says desk staff may claim it isn't valid because they can't see it in their system, but that it still is. Source: DiscoverCars help center.
  • EconomyBookings: capped at €1,700, claims within 30 days of rental end. Covers bodywork, roof, undercarriage, glass, mirrors, wheels and tires, engine, clutch, towing and keys. Excludes negligence, misfuelling, off-road driving, breaking local laws, extras, valuables, cleaning, third-party damage and natural disasters. Bank fees and exchange-rate differences are not refunded. Source: EconomyBookings FAQ on Full Coverage. The same FAQ lists 'mechanical components' as both covered and excluded, so read the policy wording before buying.

One anecdotal post on X describes a supplier refusing a broker's cover as a substitute for its own and charging $250. It is a single case, but it matches the documented risk of desk disputes.

Conflict of interest: we earn commission on bookings and DiscoverCars pays on Full Coverage sales. Compare the cap, exclusions and your credit card's rental benefits (check with your card issuer) before buying. Broker Full Coverage does not remove the supplier's deposit hold.

Do US drivers need an International Driving Permit in Greece?

Carry one. The US State Department's Greece page says Greek law requires visitors to carry a valid US license, and that rental and coverage providers may require both the license and an International Driving Permit (IDP). The Embassy does not issue IDPs; you get one in the US from AAA or AATA. Note that this page was nearly a year old when we checked, so reread it before you travel.

Some older Tripadvisor threads say an IDP is no longer needed. Ace Rent a Car Greece says Greek Traffic Police do not accept non-EU licenses on their own. Given the conflict, an IDP is a cheap safeguard against being turned away at the desk or having a problem after an incident.

AAA lists a $20 permit fee, valid for one year, and the permit is valid only when carried with your physical US license (AAA). Confirm the current fee with AAA before you apply.

Automatic or manual: what should you book in Crete?

Book a manual only if you drive one confidently on steep, winding roads. Otherwise secure an automatic early.

All 50 offers in the sampled DiscoverCars HER results were manual, with no automatics. Zigzag on Earth says most rental cars in Crete are manual and automatics are often more expensive. We found no reliable figure for the automatic price premium, and one broker (QEEQ) says automatics are limited and in demand, which is marketing but plausible.

What to do:

  • Filter for automatic on your dates and compare it to the manual price for the same car class.
  • Book earlier than you would for a manual. DiscoverCars' search demand peaks for June pickups at 2.3 times the average, then July (2.0x), August (1.8x) and September (1.7x). One travel blog (Zigzag on Earth) advises booking early and reports no last-minute summer deals.
  • Check that the booking confirms 'automatic' and not 'or similar' with no transmission guarantee; read the supplier's terms.

Which fuel policy and extras are worth it?

We could not verify the share of fuel policies at HER, so check the policy shown on each offer.

Fuel: full-to-full usually means you return the car with a full tank; check the fuel policy wording on your offer. Keep the final fuel receipt near the airport. Note that misfuelling (the wrong fuel type) is covered by DiscoverCars Full Coverage but excluded by EconomyBookings'.

Extras:

  • Child seats: needed for families with young children; confirm availability and the price in the supplier's terms. Reserve in advance.
  • GPS: often unnecessary if you use offline maps on your phone; download Crete maps before you fly.
  • Second driver: worth it if you will share long mountain drives. Check the fee and that the second driver meets age and license requirements.
  • Excess cover: compare the supplier's cover, broker cover and your credit card's benefits before choosing.

Extras are excluded from EconomyBookings' Full Coverage, so cover does not stretch to them.

What size car do you need for Crete's roads?

Pick the smallest car that fits your luggage and passengers. Village and old-town streets can be narrow, so a smaller car may be easier to handle. Small cars are also the cheapest class on DiscoverCars' HER page (from $4/day, versus SUV from $10 and station wagon from $11).

Guidance by trip type:

  • Couples, beach hopping: a small or compact car is usually enough.
  • Families: a station wagon or compact SUV for luggage and child seats; vans start from $33/day.
  • Mountain roads: prioritize a car with enough power for steep gradients; manual drivers should be comfortable on hills.

Roads, unpaved tracks and one-way drops

We have no sourced road-safety statistics for Crete, so check the State Department page above for current guidance. Only EconomyBookings' Full Coverage is shown in our sources to exclude off-road driving; check the supplier's rental terms for any unpaved-road clauses. We could not verify rules for specific routes such as the road to Balos, so ask the supplier before you go.

DiscoverCars lists Chania (142 km) as a popular one-way route, but we found no one-way fee figures. Ferry restrictions and cross-island drop-off charges also weren't verified. Read the one-way and ferry sections of the supplier's rental terms before booking.

DiscoverCars vs EconomyBookings: how to use comparison sites to rent a car at Heraklion Airport

Both are brokers: they list supplier cars and take a booking, but the supplier supplies the car and the desk. They are comparison tools, not the rental company.

What we can document:

  • Coverage: DiscoverCars' Full Coverage has the higher cap (€5,000 versus €1,700) and covers misfuelling, which EconomyBookings excludes. On documented terms DiscoverCars is ahead.
  • Price: no sourced data shows either site is cheaper at HER. No HER data was retrieved from EconomyBookings, so quote both for identical dates, car class and pickup type.
  • Reputation: Trustpilot (2026-10-07) shows DiscoverCars 4.6/5 from about 290K reviews and EconomyBookings 4.4/5 from about 155K; both companies invite customers to review.
  • Shared weakness: you pay the supplier first, claim later, and the deposit is still held.

Pick DiscoverCars if you want broker cover with the higher cap and more complete coverage list. Pick EconomyBookings if its live quote for your dates is lower and you can accept the lower cap and exclusions. Pick the supplier directly if you want to avoid broker-versus-desk disputes; the Alamo HER desk (non-affiliate) is an option for late arrivals thanks to its 07:30–23:00 in-terminal desk.

Step-by-step: how to book a Heraklion airport rental without overpaying

  1. Fix your dates and arrival time. Use the flight's scheduled arrival, then add time for baggage and the shuttle.
  2. Book early for summer. Demand peaks for June pickups, and one travel blog (Zigzag on Earth) reports no last-minute summer deals.
  3. Quote at least three sources: DiscoverCars, EconomyBookings and the supplier's own site.
  4. Filter for transmission and pickup type. Choose automatic if needed; decide between desk, shuttle or meet-and-greet.
  5. Check supplier rating. Surprice is the cheapest on DiscoverCars' HER page but rated 6.7 'Poor' (1,783 ratings) on DiscoverCars' own scale, while Beep It scores 8.5, Carwiz 7.8, MONZA 7.7 and RightCars 7.6.
  6. Read the rental terms for deposit amount, accepted cards, minimum age, young or senior fees, fuel policy, one-way fees, ferry rules and unpaved-road clauses.
  7. Decide on excess cover using the cap, exclusions and your card's benefits.
  8. Save confirmations and pack your US license, IDP, passport and a credit card for the deposit hold.

Pickup-day checklist: what to inspect and photograph

Do this before you drive away, even if the line behind you is long.

  • Walk around the car and photograph every scratch, dent and scuff, including the roof, wheels and underbody area you can see.
  • Check tires and the spare, and look at the windshield for chips.
  • Photograph the fuel gauge, odometer and dashboard warning lights.
  • Make sure every existing mark is noted on the rental form.
  • Confirm the fuel type on the fuel cap or in the paperwork; misfuelling is excluded by EconomyBookings' cover.
  • Ask what happens if you need roadside help, and save the number.
  • If the desk says your broker cover isn't valid, don't argue at length; ask what they would charge, then follow the broker's claim steps afterward and keep every receipt.

On return, photograph the car again with the fuel gauge and keep your fuel receipt.

Which rental is best for your situation?

  • Families: book a station wagon, compact SUV or van, reserve child seats in advance, and favor an in-terminal desk or meet-and-greet to avoid shuttle hassle with luggage.
  • Couples: a small car is usually enough and the cheapest class; pick whichever supplier has a strong rating over the lowest price.
  • Late arrivals: a desk with long hours helps; Alamo and National list 07:30–23:00 daily. For other suppliers, check the late-arrival policy in the rental terms, since we could not verify rules for delayed flights.
  • Budget travelers: compare total cost, not the daily rate; low-priced suppliers can have lower ratings and cover disputes.
  • Mountain roads: choose an adequately powered car, an automatic if you are not at ease with a manual on hills, and read the supplier's terms on unpaved roads and tires/underbody.
  • Americans needing an automatic: book early, filter for it, and confirm transmission in writing.

FAQ

What is the best way to choose a car rental company at Heraklion Airport?

Compare total cost in USD, including excess cover, fuel policy, deposit and extras, not just the daily rate. Then check pickup type (desk, shuttle or meet-and-greet), the supplier's rating and the rental terms. Quote DiscoverCars, EconomyBookings and the supplier's own site for identical dates before booking.

Where are the rental desks at HER and do I need a shuttle?

DiscoverCars says most suppliers are in the arrivals hall, and Alamo and National list a desk in the arrivals terminal open 07:30–23:00 daily. Many of the cheapest offers use a free shuttle to an off-site office. We could not find an official airport page, so confirm your meeting point in your voucher.

Is a broker like DiscoverCars or EconomyBookings cheaper than booking direct?

We found no sourced data showing either broker is cheaper than the supplier's own site, and no HER data was retrieved from EconomyBookings. Brokers are useful for comparing many suppliers at once. Get same-date quotes from both brokers and the supplier, then compare totals including excess cover.

How much is the deposit and can I use a US debit or credit card?

Deposit amounts at HER vary by supplier, and we could not verify them. Debit-card acceptance was not verified either. Broker Full Coverage does not remove the deposit hold, and EconomyBookings states the supplier blocks it on your credit card. Check the supplier's rental terms for the amount and accepted cards.

Do Americans need an International Driving Permit in Greece?

The US State Department says Greek law requires visitors to carry a valid US license, and rental and coverage providers may require both the license and an IDP. The Embassy does not issue IDPs; AAA lists a $20 permit fee, valid for one year when carried with your US license. Carrying an IDP is the safer choice.

Is full coverage worth it and what does it exclude?

It depends on the cap, exclusions and your other protection, such as credit card benefits. DiscoverCars' Full Coverage covers tires, underbody and misfuelling up to €5,000 but excludes cleaning, interior and third-party damage. EconomyBookings' caps at €1,700 and excludes misfuelling and off-road driving. Both reimburse after you pay the supplier.

How early should I book for summer in Crete?

Book as early as your plans allow. DiscoverCars' search demand peaks for June pickups at 2.3 times the average, followed by July, August and September, and one travel blog (Zigzag on Earth) reports no last-minute summer deals. Automatics are scarcer, so book those even earlier and confirm transmission in your booking.

Can I drop off the car in another Cretan city like Chania?

DiscoverCars lists Chania (142 km from Heraklion) as a popular one-way route, but we found no fee figures. Ferry restrictions and cross-island charges also weren't verified. Check the one-way, ferry and out-of-area clauses in the supplier's rental terms and get any drop-off fee confirmed in writing before you pay.

What happens if my flight is delayed and I miss the pickup window?

We could not verify supplier rules for late arrivals, so check the late-arrival, flight-delay and no-show clauses in your rental terms. Share your flight number if the booking asks for it and contact the supplier as soon as you know about the delay. Alamo and National list desk hours of 07:30–23:00.
