DiscoverCars Review: Is It Worth It for US Renters? Fees, Coverage Upsell and Real Costs
Some links are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes our rankings. How we make money
Quick answer
DiscoverCars is a legitimate rental broker, but it is not friction-free: most complaints come from the rental company's counter (extra charges, deposits, damage disputes), and Which? (UK) recommends Zest Car Rental over it. It suits US travelers renting abroad who will compare suppliers, read the rental conditions and accept a reimbursement-style add-on. It does not suit anyone who wants one contract and no claims process.
- DiscoverCars is a broker: the contracting company is Travel Drive GmbH in Zug, Switzerland (per its terms, last updated March 23, 2026). The rental agreement you sign at pickup is with the supplier.
- Trustpilot snapshot (checked Oct 4, 2026): TrustScore 4.6 from about 290,000 reviews, with 5% one-star. Which? (UK survey, 2026) rates it 74% overall, does not name it a Recommended Provider and points to Zest Car Rental instead.
- Free cancellation applies if you cancel through My Booking 48+ hours before pickup. The default refund is Booking Credit valid 3 years. A card refund can be requested and takes 5–10 business days.
- Full Coverage is optional and reimbursement-based: you pay the supplier first, then claim back up to €5,000 within 90 days. It is not the supplier's own waiver, so the supplier can still hold a deposit.
- We found no separate booking fee in the terms, but check the checkout breakdown. Prices are converted from the local currency at European Central Bank rates, and your card issuer may add its own foreign-transaction fee.
- Which? ties most bad experiences to low-rated suppliers such as Goldcar. Note the supplier's name and rating before you book.
- Disclosure: LifePlusTech may earn a commission if you book through our links. That does not change the verdict below.
Our picks
Higher Full Coverage cap than EconomyBookings
DiscoverCars
Best for: US travelers renting abroad who want to compare suppliers, keep a cancellable booking and accept a reimbursement-style add-on
DiscoverCars compares offers from many rental companies and sells an optional Full Coverage product. On the terms documented in our notes, it has a higher reimbursement cap than EconomyBookings (€5,000 vs €1,700), a longer claim window (90 vs 30 days) and faster card refunds (5–10 vs up to 30 business days). That is a narrow set of criteria, and Which? ranks Zest Car Rental above it, so it rewards careful readers rather than everyone.
Pros
- Large comparison base: the company claims 160+ countries, and Which? says it works with 700+ rental companies
- Free cancellation through My Booking up to 48 hours before pickup
- Full Coverage reimburses up to €5,000 with a 90-day claim window and, per its help page, includes wrong-fuel, tires and undercarriage
- Trustpilot 4.6 with a 5% one-star share as of Oct 2026 (not a like-for-like comparison with other brokers)
Cons
- Which? (UK survey) does not recommend it and gives the broker-sold cover a poor policy score
- Full Coverage is reimbursement-only; the supplier may call it invalid and still hold a deposit
- Default refund is Booking Credit, not money back on your card
- Not for you if you want a single contract with one company at the counter and no claims process
Price: Prices vary by destination, supplier and dates. No official Full Coverage per-day price is published in our sources, so check it at checkout. Confirm all prices before paying.
Alternative broker for a second quote
EconomyBookings
Best for: Renters who want a second quote to compare against DiscoverCars
EconomyBookings is run by Booking Group Corporation Ltd (Latvia) and is also a broker. On the points in our notes it has a lower Full Coverage cap, a shorter claim window, slower card withdrawals and a higher one-star share on Trustpilot. It is still worth a quote if the price for your exact trip is lower.
Pros
- Useful second price check; its terms say one-way fees are typically not included and are paid at the counter
- Free cancellation more than 48 hours before pickup, with a refund request window of 6 months
- Optional Last Minute Cancellation add-on for cancelling up to 1 hour before pickup (add-on fee not refunded)
- Trustpilot 4.4 from about 155,000 reviews as of Oct 2026
Cons
- Full Coverage caps at EUR 1,700 and claims must be filed within 30 days
- Card withdrawals can take up to 30 business days
- Trustpilot summary flags cover not being recognized at the counter and unclear final pricing
- Not for you if you want the highest reimbursement cap or the fastest card refund
Price: Check the live quote and Full Coverage price at checkout. No verified USD prices were collected for this article.

Is DiscoverCars legit, and how does it work?
Yes. DiscoverCars is a real car rental broker. According to its terms and conditions (last updated March 23, 2026), you contract with Travel Drive GmbH of Zug, Switzerland (reg. CHE-132.261.137), and Swiss law and courts apply. Payments may be processed by affiliates in the UAE or Latvia. Wikipedia says the company was founded in 2013 in Riga, Latvia, as Discover Car Hire, so “Latvia-founded, contracting through a Swiss entity” is the accurate shorthand.
The key point for this DiscoverCars review is that it is a broker, not a rental company. It shows you offers from rental suppliers and takes your booking. Under sections 4.5–4.6 of its terms, your obligations to the rental company begin when you sign that company's rental agreement at pickup, and DiscoverCars' booking agreement does not govern them. In practice:
- You pay DiscoverCars at booking (partial or full prepayment, or nothing, depending on the offer).
- You pay the supplier at pickup for any balance and the extras you choose, and the supplier takes the deposit hold.
- The supplier, not DiscoverCars, decides at the desk whether your documents and card are acceptable.
So the answer to “is DiscoverCars legit?” is yes, but the experience depends heavily on which supplier you land with. Which? (UK) attributes most bad experiences to low-rated suppliers and names Goldcar as the lowest-scoring supplier for 10+ years. Write down the supplier's name and rating before you pay.
What do DiscoverCars reviews actually say?
The picture is strong on average and mixed on detail. These are public snapshots, not our own testing. We did not make test bookings.
Trustpilot (checked Oct 4, 2026)
- TrustScore 4.6 from about 290,000 reviews (the count moves daily; about 52,700 were in the last 12 months).
- 5 stars 76%, 4 stars 16%, 3 stars 2%, 2 stars under 1%, 1 star 5%.
- The profile is claimed, uses a paid Trustpilot subscription and invites reviews, which can influence the mix of reviews. The company replies to 99% of negative reviews.
- Trustpilot's AI summary says complaints focus on extra charges at the desk, missing deposits and modification costs.
Which? (UK, Feb/Mar 2026 survey)
Which? gave DiscoverCars 74% overall and did not name it a Recommended Provider. It scored satisfaction with the listed rental companies 2/5 and clarity of additional charges 5/5. Its verdict is that there are better car hire brokers, for example Zest Car Rental. These are UK respondents, so read it as a signal, not a US result.
App ratings
DiscoverCars' own site claims 4.8 on both the App Store and Google Play. Search snippets show Google Play around 4.8 with about 25,600 reviews (May 2026), and the US App Store figures we saw were stale. Check the store pages yourself.
How to read it
Trustpilot scores are not like-for-like across brokers: review volumes, invitation practices and profile subscriptions differ, so a 4.6 vs a 4.4 is a weak basis for choosing. Weight a review more if it names the supplier and location, since the supplier controls the counter experience. Our notes record only the complaint themes from Trustpilot's AI summary (desk charges, deposits and modification costs), so we cannot say what the praise is mostly about.
How much does DiscoverCars really cost in USD?
There is no single price. Rates are set in the pickup country's currency and DiscoverCars shows USD converted at European Central Bank rates (terms 3.18–3.20). Your card issuer may add a foreign-transaction fee, and DiscoverCars says it is not responsible for that difference. That is the closest thing to a “hidden fee” in the documents we reviewed.
Other cost layers to check on the checkout page:
- Booking fee: we found no separate booking fee in the terms, but nothing explicitly rules one out. Verify the checkout breakdown.
- Payment split: terms 3.8 describe partial prepayment, full prepayment, or pay-nothing-now offers. Extras chosen at pickup are charged by the supplier (terms 3.14).
- Full Coverage: optional, with a per-day price shown in your quote. DiscoverCars publishes no flat price, and the blog figures we found are not official, so check it at checkout.
- Young or senior driver fees and one-way fees: we could not verify these for DiscoverCars, so check the rental conditions on your quote. For EconomyBookings, one-way fees are typically not included and are paid at the counter (EconomyBookings terms 3.5).
- Deposit: the hold goes on the main driver's credit card, another accepted card, or is taken in cash, and deposit-free offers exist (terms 3.15 and section 10). More below.
How to compare the real cost (formula, not a quote)
We did not run live searches, so we are not showing sample prices. Use this formula with your own quotes for the same dates, car class and pickup:
- Total = base rate × days + the damage cover you will actually use × days + mandatory local fees + your card's foreign fee.
- Run it once for the broker (with or without Full Coverage) and once for the supplier's own site (with counter waiver, or with card coverage if your issuer confirms it applies).
- Add the deposit separately: how it is held depends on the supplier and the offer (card, cash, or a deposit-free offer).
The lesson: comparing headline base rates is not enough. Compare base rate plus the damage cover you will really use.
Is DiscoverCars Full Coverage worth it?
This is consumer information, not personal advice. Based on DiscoverCars' help page and terms (section 9):
How it works
Full Coverage is optional and reimbursement-based. You pay the rental company for any covered cost, then claim the money back from DiscoverCars, up to €5,000 in total (terms 9.2 say the maximum appears on your voucher, so check the USD equivalent yourself). Claims must be filed within 90 calendar days of drop-off with the rental agreement, pickup and return condition records, the supplier's invoice, proof of payment and your bank or PayPal details (terms 9.11).
What it covers
- Excess for damage, vandalism and theft (theft of the whole car only)
- Tires, wheels, windows, mirrors, hubcaps, lights, bodywork, roof and undercarriage
- Hit-and-run, towing and roadside assistance, lost keys and lockout, taxi to the rental location
- Putting in the wrong fuel, damage admin fees and loss of use
What it does not cover
- Third-party liability
- Interior damage and cleaning
- Breaking the rental agreement or local law (drink or drugs, off-road, traffic violations)
- Personal belongings, extras, hotel costs, bank or currency fees
- War, strikes, severe weather, hail and floods, and losses from a no-show
What to know before buying
The supplier cannot see it. The supplier still takes its deposit hold, and DiscoverCars says agents may call the cover “invalid” because it is not a waiver in their system, though it says it still applies. It also does not replace the basic CDW: if CDW is not included in your rate and you cannot prove you have your own, that is on you (terms 9.4). Availability is “country-based”, and we could not confirm whether every US-resident or US-pickup booking qualifies, so check eligibility at checkout.
Which? gave the broker-sold cover a poor policy score, and EconomyBookings' Trustpilot summary notes broker-sold cover is sometimes not recognized at the counter. That is the same friction.
When it can make sense
- You have no other damage cover and are comfortable paying first and claiming later.
- You want cover that explicitly lists tires, glass and undercarriage. Check what the supplier's own waiver includes before assuming a gap.
When to skip it
- Your card issuer confirms rental coverage applies to your booking (see the next section).
- You cannot tolerate a large upfront hold or a reimbursement delay.
DiscoverCars vs booking direct: which is cheaper?
We could not verify direct prices at Hertz, Avis or Enterprise, so we do not claim a winner on price. A fair framework:
- Where a broker can help: comparing many suppliers at once and cancellation windows, if the terms on your booking say so.
- Where direct can help: one contract, one customer service line, loyalty status, and no gap between what the broker sold and what the counter recognizes.
- Where they may differ: we did not research direct bookings, so we do not claim the deposit, fuel policy, mileage limits or local fees are identical between a broker and a direct booking. Compare them on your own quotes.
How to compare in 10 minutes: run the same dates, car class and pickup location on DiscoverCars and the supplier's site, and add the damage cover you would really use (counter waiver, Full Coverage or card coverage) to each. Also compare cancellation terms, deposit amount, mileage and fuel policy.
Can US renters use credit card rental coverage?
It depends on your card issuer's terms, and we could not confirm how issuers treat broker or split-payment bookings (part to DiscoverCars, part at the counter). We also could not establish what “declining the waiver” means if the broker rate already includes a basic waiver. Check your card's benefit guide, ask the issuer to confirm in writing, and pay both parts with the same card. Card rental coverage does not generally include liability, so confirm that point too.
What are the most common DiscoverCars problems and how do you avoid them?
Based on Trustpilot's summary, Which? and DiscoverCars' own terms, problems cluster here:
Counter upsell
The agent says your cover is not valid or that you need their waiver. Stay calm, ask them to show in the rental conditions where the product is mandatory, and keep your voucher in hand. Renting in Mexico? Mandatory local liability cover is a gap in our sources: we could not verify whether it applies to your booking, so read the supplier's rental conditions before you book and check the destination's rules. If you pay for something you believe is not required, get an itemized receipt and note it so you can dispute it later.
Deposit hold
The supplier holds a deposit on the main driver's credit card (or another accepted card, or cash) to cover excess, fines, tolls and fuel. It normally drops off within about 3 weeks after the rental ends (terms 3.15). Some suppliers accept credit cards only, and checking that is your job (terms 3.11). Debit-card deposits usually require buying the supplier's own daily cover at the counter (single-source, from a help-page snippet we could not fully open). “Deposit-free” offers mean DiscoverCars guarantees the deposit to the supplier, but you still need a card for extras (terms section 10).
No-show
Arriving without the required documents, an acceptable card or the deposit counts as a no-show (terms 7.1), which generally means no refund.
Damage disputes
Photograph and video every panel, wheels, glass, roof and interior at pickup and return, and keep the signed condition report. You need these for a Full Coverage claim.
Fuel policy
Check whether it is full-to-full or something else, and keep the final fuel receipt near the return location.
Refunds
The default is Booking Credit. If you want money back to your card, use the link in the cancellation email. If there is a dispute with the supplier, DiscoverCars' terms say your obligations to the supplier come from the rental agreement, so contact both and keep written records.
What is the DiscoverCars cancellation policy?
According to DiscoverCars' help pages (checked Oct 2026):
- 48-hour rule: full refund if you cancel 48+ hours before pickup through My Booking. Cancelling with the supplier does not count.
- Refund format: Booking Credit by default, valid 3 years. You can switch to a card refund using the link in the cancellation email (valid 1 year). Card refunds take 5–10 business days once requested.
- Late cancellations: under 48 hours, or when you booked less than 48 hours before pickup, the rental is generally non-refundable. Full Coverage is refunded in full until 23:59 the day before pickup, then as Booking Credit only. Nothing is refunded after the pickup time.
- Flight cancelled: this does not automatically mean a refund. Support may ask the supplier on your behalf.
By comparison, EconomyBookings refunds in full more than 48 hours before pickup as E-Wallet credit by default. Withdrawal to a card is free but is processed within up to 30 business days, and you must request it within 6 months. Always confirm the terms shown on your own booking.
Who should use DiscoverCars and who should skip it?
Good fit:
- Leisure travelers abroad who want to compare suppliers and keep a cancellable booking.
- Renters who are comfortable photographing the car, reading rental conditions and filing a claim if needed.
- People without other damage cover who want a defined add-on and understand it is reimbursement-style.
Consider booking direct or another broker if:
- You rely on a card's rental coverage and your issuer has not confirmed that broker bookings qualify.
- You want the smoothest counter experience, with loyalty perks and one contract.
- You cannot tolerate a counter dispute or a long reimbursement process.
Do you need an International Driving Permit?
It depends on the destination and the supplier. AAA (one of two organizations authorized by the US State Department) lists countries where it says you need one, including Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Croatia, Austria, the UK, Japan, Thailand, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and Aruba. The permit costs $20 plus a $10 photo fee and shipping, takes about 5 business days, is printed only, and per AAA is valid for 1 year or until your US license expires, whichever comes first. AAA's page is inconsistent on Mexico (it lists Mexico yet says a US license is valid for short tourist trips), so check the destination authority and the supplier's rental conditions. EconomyBookings' terms also say some countries require an IDP and that you need a license held at least 12 months.
What are the best DiscoverCars alternatives?
Zest Car Rental is the broker Which? (UK survey) recommends instead of DiscoverCars, so on that source it is the one to check first. We did not research its terms, prices or US availability, and our notes do not confirm its official website, so search for its official site and verify availability for your pickup country before relying on it. We have no affiliate relationship with it.
EconomyBookings is the closest like-for-like broker we researched. Per its terms (effective July 21, 2026), it is operated by Booking Group Corporation Ltd (Latvia), with a Trustpilot score of 4.4 from about 155,000 reviews (checked Oct 5, 2026). On the documented points, Full Coverage reimburses up to EUR 1,700 (vs €5,000 at DiscoverCars), claims must be filed within 30 days (vs 90), card withdrawals can take up to 30 business days (vs 5–10), and 8% of Trustpilot reviews are one-star (vs 5%). Trustpilot figures are not like-for-like, so use them as a rough signal. Choose EconomyBookings if its quote is meaningfully cheaper for your exact trip.

Booking direct with Hertz, Avis, Enterprise or another supplier gives you one contract. We have not verified their current prices or policies, so compare them yourself using the framework above.

How do you book DiscoverCars step by step, with a pre-pickup checklist?
Booking
- Search with your exact dates, pickup and drop-off, and driver age.
- Sort by price, then open the supplier's details: note the supplier's name, rating, location (airport or shuttle), fuel policy, mileage and deposit.
- Read the rental conditions for card type, deposit amount, young driver fees and any mandatory local cover.
- Decide on damage cover: card coverage (confirm in writing), Full Coverage, or a counter waiver.
- Check the final price in USD, remembering the conversion and possible card fee.
- Save the voucher and My Booking details, and note the 48-hour cancellation cutoff in your calendar.
Pre-pickup checklist
- Passport, valid US driver's license, an IDP if required, and the voucher
- A credit card in the main driver's name with enough limit for the deposit, unless your offer is deposit-free or the supplier takes cash
- A printed or offline copy of the rental conditions
- Your card issuer's written confirmation if relying on card coverage
At the counter
- Compare the rental agreement to your voucher before signing
- Decline add-ons you do not need, politely and once
- Photograph and video the car, including wheels, glass, roof and interior, and make sure all damage is on the condition form
At return
- Fill the tank if required and keep the receipt
- Photograph the car and get a signed return slip
- Watch your card statement for the deposit release (normally within about 3 weeks)
Verdict: is DiscoverCars the better choice, and who should pick what?
Verdict: DiscoverCars is legit, and on the specific terms we documented it has a higher Full Coverage cap, a longer claim window and faster card refunds than EconomyBookings. That is a narrow comparison. Which? (UK) ranks Zest Car Rental above DiscoverCars and recommends against DiscoverCars, and complaints about supplier counters, deposits and refunds are a consistent pattern. We have not researched Zest, so we cannot say it is better for US renters, only that the one independent survey we found prefers it.
Pick DiscoverCars if… you will compare quotes, read the supplier's rental conditions, keep photographic evidence and want a cancellable booking with a higher-cap reimbursement add-on.
Pick EconomyBookings if… its quote for your exact dates is meaningfully cheaper and you are fine with a lower cap, a 30-day claim window and slower card withdrawals.
Check Zest Car Rental first if… you want the broker Which? recommends. Confirm its US availability and terms yourself.
Book direct if… you need one contract and no counter friction, or you rely on card coverage your issuer has not confirmed for broker bookings.
Disclosure: LifePlusTech may earn a commission if you book through the DiscoverCars or EconomyBookings links on this page. We do not state a commission rate because we could not verify an official figure, and affiliate status did not decide the ranking.

FAQ
Is DiscoverCars legit or a scam?
DiscoverCars is a legitimate broker. Its terms name Travel Drive GmbH of Zug, Switzerland, as the contracting company, and it has about 290,000 Trustpilot reviews (score 4.6, checked Oct 2026). Complaints mostly involve supplier counter charges, deposits and refunds, and Which? (UK) does not recommend it, so read the supplier's terms carefully.
Does DiscoverCars charge hidden fees?
We found no separate booking fee in DiscoverCars' terms, but verify the checkout breakdown. Prices are set in the local currency and converted to USD at European Central Bank rates, and your card issuer may add a foreign-transaction fee. Extras chosen at pickup are charged by the supplier. We could not verify young-driver, senior-driver or one-way fees for DiscoverCars, so check the rental conditions.
Is DiscoverCars Full Coverage worth it?
It depends. It reimburses up to €5,000 after you pay the supplier and file a claim within 90 days, and it excludes liability and interior damage. The supplier still takes a deposit and may call the cover invalid. It can make sense if you have no other damage cover. Check its per-day price at checkout.
Can I cancel a DiscoverCars booking for free?
Yes, if you cancel through My Booking 48 or more hours before pickup. The default refund is Booking Credit valid 3 years; a card refund can be requested via the email link and takes 5–10 business days. Under 48 hours the rental is generally non-refundable. Cancelling with the supplier does not count.
How does the deposit work with a DiscoverCars booking?
The rental company holds a deposit on the main driver's credit card, on another accepted card, or takes cash, to cover excess, fines, tolls and fuel. It normally drops off within about 3 weeks of the rental ending. Some suppliers accept credit cards only, and some offers are deposit-free. Debit-card deposits may require buying the supplier's own cover.
Can I use my credit card's rental coverage with a DiscoverCars booking?
Unclear. We could not confirm how card issuers treat broker or split-payment bookings. Check your card issuer's terms and ask for written confirmation before you book, pay both parts with the same card, and note that card rental coverage generally does not include liability.
Do US drivers need an International Driving Permit?
It depends on the country and supplier. AAA lists many destinations as requiring one, including Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan. AAA's permit costs $20 plus a $10 photo fee and shipping, and takes about 5 business days. Check the destination authority and the rental conditions, especially for Mexico, where AAA's page is inconsistent.
How does DiscoverCars compare with EconomyBookings?
On these documented terms, DiscoverCars has the higher Full Coverage cap (€5,000 vs EUR 1,700), a longer claim window (90 vs 30 days) and faster card refunds (5–10 vs up to 30 business days). Both default to credit refunds and use a 48-hour cutoff. Trustpilot scores are not like-for-like, so compare live quotes.
Is there a better broker than DiscoverCars?
Which? (UK) recommends Zest Car Rental over DiscoverCars and does not name DiscoverCars a Recommended Provider. We have not researched Zest's terms, prices or US availability, so verify those on its official site. Quote the same dates and car class on each broker and compare total cost including damage cover.
